Chapter Eighteen

River

The pressure increased on River’s shoulder. She lurched forward as the figure behind her propelled over her.

“Hel—” River tried to swear as her face hit the floor.

“Does Elora allow you to speak like that, Princess?” The figure in black spun her dagger gingerly between his fingers before he tossed it to his left hand.

Heldours. Not only had he spotted her, but he recognized her.

He balanced the blade on two fingers. “Decent weight. Have you ever actually used it, though?”

River righted herself and took one small step back to brace herself into position, one foot planted behind the other, accidentally knocking it into the mattress. The room wasn’t big enough for the kind of fight that was coming. She raised a fist in front of her but kept her arms loose.

“Don’t worry. I won’t use it.” The blade landed with a thud in the wash bucket to his left. “Not really my style.”

“What exactly is your style, Barthomule?”

A visible shudder ran through him. “Call me Blakey.”

“Are you not the former prince of Morsaw?”

A dark laugh came from behind the mask. He opened his mouth, and yellow teeth shone. “I have as much claim to the throne as any of the bastards who came after me.”

“You murdered your mother and tried to kill your father. Now you run around sharing information with Spitarians and spreading lies to my people. I would say you abdicated your throne a few times over.”

He took a step closer, rubbing his covered chin, and she realized he wasn’t much larger than her. They were almost eye-to-eye, although he was slightly broader.

“You seem to think you have it all figured out. Though the notes you stole from my room tell me otherwise.” He crossed his arms, muscles bulging through the fitted black cloak.

“Do you deny what you’re being accused of, then?”

“I don’t deny anything. You and the rest of the crown scum can think what you want of me. I couldn’t care less, though we had high hopes for you, River. We thought since the prophecy spoke of you, maybe you would be more open-minded than the rest of the fools. I’m disappointed.”

Her spine stiffened. It irritated her how deep and rough his voice was, like gravel scraping against the ground. She feared she would dream of it long after he was dead, haunting her every waking moment. She didn’t have time for this.

River planted her foot on the edge of the bed. “This blasted boot.” She fiddled with the strap and looked up at him. “Since you seem to know who I am, you wouldn’t happen to want to surrender and head back to face your punishment, would you?” She silently pleaded with him to say yes.

“Had I done something wrong, I would gladly. Though, Princess, I would consider the reasons you’re here.” He cocked his head .

He said “princess” like it was an insult.

“Do you think you’re on some mission for the greater good? Or is it merely to silence the truth?”

River’s nostrils flared. Did this man think he was spreading the truth? “A princess isn’t sent to silence a thug.
